from discoveryfest youth

At recess now, we have coaches who ask us what we want to play. I don’t think anyone has really asked me what I wanted to play before and then helped me play it!
— Derek, 4th grade
Without DiscoveryFEST, I wouldn’t have the chance to try a bunch of new things. If I just went home after school, I wouldn’t have anything to do there.
— Dariane, 3rd grade
I’ve never really had the chance to use paint before and and being creative in that way. But in art class, I got to use paint and found out I really like to use paint to make new things.
— Paige, 1st grade
Our recess coaches are awesome! They let us play fun games like football, basketball, soccer. I can ask the coaches to play and not only do they, they help us put new games that we would like to play at recess.
— Mayyen, 3rd grade
Since afterschool started, I’ve learned to cooperate and work with others. If we had gymnastics, I would use that power to help others learn to do flips!
— Kennedy, 3rd Grader
I like having coaches with us at recess because if someone says or does something that isn’t nice, our coaches do something right away!
— Elena, 4th Grader
Since we’ve had DiscoveryFEST coaches at recess, I’ve learned that it doesn’t matter if you’re fussing with someone, you can play it out!

I love being a part of the Krewe of Play and helping the 1st graders with their recess. It has shown me that I want to help more with people that our younger than me!
— Janae, 4th Grader
What I enjoy about recess is that people actually ask me questions about what I like and what I would like to do. When I told my coach that I liked to jump rope, she taught me some new jump roping games that I didn’t even know about!
— Ken'niron, 1st Grader
Afterschool is so much fun! I get to be with my friends. I get to make new friends. But, I also got a chance to act! People always tell me I’m a character, so it was fun to act out new characters!
— Brea, 3rd Grader

from discoveryfest staff

I just love DiscoveryFEST! It has not only been a tremendous honor to be witness to the creative endeavors of youth, but it has also enabled me to grow and continue work to make sure youth have creative opportunities and outlets.
— Anne Marie, Creative Writing Instructor
DiscoveryFEST opens youth’s minds to experiences they otherwise wouldn’t be exposed to. They don’t need to be good at it or even experience it ever again, but they have been exposed to it and that opens their minds for the future
— Dominique, Art Instructor
DiscoveryFEST provides youth with an outlet to use the things they learn in school in a different way; especially in schools where recess and similar programs have been diminished. It’s great that kids have these types of opportunities through DiscoveryFEST and its partners.
— Kendric, Chess Instructor
There’s a lot of judgement in childhood and I look forward everyday to getting to have a job where I get to have, fun, be silly, play games with kids, and give them safe environment where they can be in a space free of judgement.
— Marie, Discovery Arcade Instructor
Recess might be the only play time youth get to experience. And by being out there, I get to give them a play time where they get interact with new things and people that brings play to a new level!
— Coach Shondreka, Recess Coach
To be a part of DiscoveryFEST, I get the opportunity everyday to have a small, but significant influence on a young person’s day. Every day, you have the chance to make a memory that will last long into their future.
— Coach Jeff, Recess Coach
DiscoveryFEST gives kids an opportunity to just…do! When a child is here, they’re here in a whole new focus, enjoying new things. A lot of the kids I work with haven’t played soccer, basketball, or volleyball before. So, not only are they getting a chance to be active they’re also being introduced to new games at the same time!
— Mensa, PlayFEST Instructor

from School Leaders

DiscoveryFEST provides New Orleans youth access to structured games and activities and helps them get excited about sports, physical activity, and learning those games and how they can replicate these at their homes. This provides them opportunities not only to play, but to be kids; which is incredibly important in New Orleans where sports are a huge part of the culture.
— Sarah Beth Greenberg, School Leader at KIPP Believe Primary
Students in DiscoveryFEST are more creative; they’ve practiced creative thinking and problem solving skills that extend outside of the after school or recess space and into the classroom and other areas of their lives.
— Korbin Johnson, School Leader at KIPP Central City Primary
Partnering with DiscoveryFEST really helps to balance out the enrichment offerings that we’re able to offer. It adds a panel of arts, sciences, and physical activity that supplement the items that might be missing from our curriculum.
— Elsa Sackett, Coordinator of Enrichment at Lycee Francais de la Nouvelle Orleans
I’ve seen a lot of kids get pretty upset when things don’t go their way in play or sport. When this happens, it can take away from crucial play time or discourage them all together. DiscoveryFEST students possess more resillency, can continue playing easier, adapt when things don’t go their way, and continue to have fun
— Bob Payne, Director of Co-Curricular Learning, New Orleans College Prep
I think the processes DiscoveryFEST creates are absolutely criticial. It allows kids to tap in to who they are, find their voice, and creativity is necessary in all aspects of life.

When our students participate in a DIscoveryFEST mini-camp, they come back to school the next day talking about what they learned, created, and ask constantly when the next camp will be. Mini-campers also possess a greater investment in school or were really shy and camp gives them another level of exposure to new people and helps develop friendships and a deeper stake in our school.
— Jake Barclay, Director of Extended Learning, Bricolage Academy
